Lawyers for embattled
media and entertainment guru, Kwesi Kyei Darkwa popularly known as KKD, have
filed a bail application at the Human Rights Courts in Accra for their client.
KKD is in Police custody
and expected to be there until January 8, 2015 after he was charged with rape
by a 19-year-old, Ewuraeffe Orleans Thompson. On Tuesday, an Accra Magistrate
court denied the renowned broadcaster bail.
In an interview with
citifmonline.com, a member of KKD’s legal team, Gary Nimako said, “We are
seeking for the bail from the Human Rights court because the District court
can’t grant our client bail.”
“We will go back to the
District court for the main case but this court can’t grant him bail that is
why we have begun filing processes at the Human Rights court for his bail. So
we want the court to hear the bail application on 7th January, 2015,” lawyer
Nimako explained. He also revealed that the Attorney General will be served a
copy of the application on Wednesday and they will also seek her advice on
where the case should be tried. “The District court cannot sit on the matter
and so we also want the A-G to also advice on whether they can maintain the
charge of rape against our client,” he added.
Ms Thompson, according to
the charge sheet presented to the court by the Police, the incident happened in
a suite at the African Regent Hotel on December 27, 2014 when the accused
invited her to help him powder his face.
She alleged that, KKD forcibly
had sex with her in the washroom after which a report was made to the Police
and a medical report was issued to the complainant to attend hospital.
When KKD was arrested, he
denied the offence and stated that the Ms Thompson gave her consent and that he
did not force her.
