Kumawood actors have been
angry about a week now that none of their members have been appointed to play
any ambassadorial role in the Brazil world Cup 2014. However, the president of
Kumasi Actors Guild, Bill Asamoah expressed his disappointment in the Sports Ministry
and indicated that the association will be submitting its plea to
the office of the Sports Ministry in Kumasi latest June 3rd.
In an interview with Bill Asamoah, he stated
categorically that contrary to what was in the public domain, the plea was not
to seek for financial assistance from government to take their members to
Brazil but rather to make actors from the Kumawood fraternity as ambassadors.
Yesterday however, Jones Agyemang, CEO of J.A Films led a group that
was able to solicit for funding from the government for some actors, actresses
and producers. According to Jones Agyemang, “The Government is
only funding the tickets for the 7 of us. All other bills including
accommodation, feeding and tickets to watch the games are also being taken care
of by a non-governmental organization known as Sports Education and Management.”
Interestingly Bill Asamoah claims the
Kumasi Actors’ Guild has not received any official communication from the
office of the Ministry of Sport and the Actors Guild renounces any affiliation
to Jones Agyemang and his colleagues.
Now this whole issue of ambassadorial
responsibilities all borders on who is more popular and can pull a lot of
revenue from the masses to support governments bid to transport football fans
to Brazil. In an interview with Maame Efua Wajeto, who is the coordinating
manager for the ambassadors, she hinted that the Ministry wanted actors who can
represent both the local and English language hence their choice for the Jackie
Appiah and Jon Dumelo. This statement by the coordinating inadvertently
downplays the popularity and importance of Kumawood. Bill Asamoah strongly
disagrees with her. He said Actors in Kumasi have massive followers and are
great icons as well. He made mention of some actors like Kojo Nkansah Lil Win,
who is face of MTN telecommunication company and coca cola, Nana Ama McBrown
who has been endorsing big companies and others. Therefore what Maame Efua, the
coordinating manager said is far from the truth.
