WANDE COAL - "PLAN B" REVIEW

Wande Coal is an African, a Nigerian to be precise. He is a musician who normally does Afro-pop songs; the ‘Bumper to Bumper’ song hit maker. He has come up with a song entitled Plan B. Produced by Starboy Entertainment producer Maleek Berry.

‘Plan B’ is R&B slow jam music genre. Its duration is four minutes which is normal for such music genre. Its Beat Per Minute (BPM) is 130.01 meaning the tempo is slow.
The song begins with humming “uuuu...huuu hu huuu hu...”, and gradually leads to the first verse “Baby girl I understand.....” before the chorus “He don’t love as much as I do.....” The verses in the song are three which is also normal for such music genre.

Wande Coal in this song talks about the fact that he is in love with a lady who is already in a relationship. He convinces the lady to make him her second boyfriend. He therefore assures the lady that no matter how long it takes, he will wait for her love because he believes the lady’s man is not treating her right.

The collaboration and arrangement is good, thus the lyrics is in line with the music genre. The lyrics is romantic so as the genre. Besides, some tongue twisting could be noticed in the song (Verses one and two). It has no rap in it, just singing and humming.

The song also has a very good intonation, thus the rise and fall of vocal pith is just perfect and only experts are capable of managing such vocal pitch. Some parts of the song have low pitch, while other parts; especially the second verse has a very good high pitch. The rhyme is also on point, as well as the melody.

Although vocals are clear, there is a problem with the second verse. The second verse is nasalized and also has much tongue twisting, plus jargons which make it unclear to the listener.

Anyway, below is the lyrics for the second verse.
‘’you know I’ve been saving all my loving, cos I got all the time in the world.
If I say I’m lying I’ll be wrong. And I could do better, cos I’m here for the long run
And we’ll have a good time. And show you all the good life. I ain’t tryna gas you up.
Shawty listen to me. He saying ‘I will give you a ring.’ I will be your man; your one and only, cruising on in Riviera. Body party no Ciara.
Tired of waiting for your endless love.’’

The highlighted phrases in the above lyrics are jargons.
1. ‘Long run’ means he will be with the lady till eternity.
2.‘Gas you up’ means he is not talking falsely
3.‘Shawty’ means lady.
4. 'Riviera’ is a vacation area on the Mediterranean Sea located between southern France and Italy. And he will travel with the lady to that area.
5.'Body party no ciara’. Body party is a romantic song by an American female artist called Ciara. So he’s implying that there is going to be a love affair between only the two of them without any other lady.

I hope now you wouldn’t get confused when listening to the second verse.

Part of the lyrics in the third verse is not original. The line ‘I will do anything....anything for.........’’ is picked from an old blues music, entitled ‘Anything’ by the band 3T.
Well I wonder if he has paid royalties to the 3T band.

Also, there are some similarities between this song, Reuben Shutter’s Sorry 2004 song, and Craig David’s Johnny song. They all begin with F chord (combination of key notes) which makes the beginning quite similar. One of the instruments used in this song is piano.

In all, the song is a beautiful romantic song that engages the listeners’ emotions, and makes them want to listen to it over and over again. Aside the fact that it promotes cheating in relationships, I think it will stand the test of time because of its nature.
